Plastic has become our biggest environmental disaster. It started out as an incredible innovation back in 1907 that literally changed the world. Yet now we can’t live without it. It’s used in just about every single product in the world.
Brands are now trying to eliminate plastic from their products, however we may never be able to stop our dependency on plastic. What we can do, however, is learn how to properly recycle plastic, so we can hopefully minimize the impact it has on our environment.
The problem is, plastics are all different. And unless you’re tuned into what each plastic code means, you probably don’t really know how to recycle most of the plastic you buy. Only 9% of the plastic that has been made globally has been recycled. 12% has been incinerated, and the other 79% has ended up in landfill (and our oceans).
These statistics were the motivation behind SIRKL, an app that tells you exactly how to recycle different plastics at home. The brains behind SIRKL are four University students in the Netherlands.
The students wanted to come up with a solution that no other company appears to be doing. The app will give its users direct information about recycling, facts about plastic, and other relevant environmental information.
The app is still in the creation stage. So in the meantime the team have created a Facebook Group where you can post a photo of your plastics and they tell you how best to recycle them. Join the group to stay in the loop when the app becomes available.
